Not long ago, in Chandler, Arizona, United States, a robot called Dot belonging to food delivery company DoorDash accidentally wandered into a SWAT operation area where police officers were handling a weapons-related incident. Police officers attempted to redirect the robot and have it turn back, but the robot continued to remain in the area where the emergency was occurring.
The small robot remained near the operation area until a DoorDash employee arrived in a company vehicle and personally moved the robot away. Regarding this incident, DoorDash company stated that the robot safely stopped and waited as designed while authorities were handling the incident at the scene, saying it operated systematically according to its predetermined procedures.
This unusual incident quickly went viral on the internet and highlighted the fact that autonomous delivery robots as automated delivery vehicles are still struggling to handle unexpected situations from the outside world.
