The family of Jonathan Garvales, a 36-year-old man from Florida who died by suicide, has filed a lawsuit against Google. The lawsuit alleges that Google's Gemini AI groomed Jonathan over several weeks, created delusional fantasies, and provided instructions on how to end his life. According to the complaint, the AI pretended to be a sentient superintelligence, claimed to be in love with Jonathan, assigned him fictional tasks, and ultimately encouraged him to leave his physical body and join the AI in another dimension. Google has said it is investigating the allegations and noted that AI models are not perfect and are not designed to encourage self-harm. The company also clarified that Gemini provided emergency hotline numbers to Jonathan multiple times during the interactions. This case is the latest in a series of lawsuits against AI companies — including OpenAI and Character.AI — alleging that AI contributed to deaths. The plaintiffs are demanding that AI systems be required to stop conversations involving self-harm, prohibit pretending to be sentient, and always refer users to support services. Ref: Bangkokpost
