Has Zuckerberg Sidelined Meta's Highest-Paid Employee?

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is quietly stripping authority from 28-year-old Alexandr Wang, whom he had hired with high hopes to lead the company's AI division. Wang, who commands a hundred-million-dollar salary and was given full control of Meta Superintelligence Labs, is finding the ground shifting beneath him.
Nine months in, things have changed. Zuckerberg has now formed a new AI engineering organization, led by Reality Labs veteran executive Maher Saba, reporting directly to CTO Andrew Bosworth. This new structure bypasses Wang's authority and creates a competing team that can move faster than his.
The friction started when Wang's focus was primarily on catching up with OpenAI and Google, while veteran executives Chris Cox and Bosworth wanted to use Instagram and Facebook data to build products people would actually use — a fundamental disagreement in vision. In addition, Meta's Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun resigned last November rather than work under Wang.
Now, Wang — still Meta's highest-paid employee — finds himself isolated and without real influence. The new team will also handle data infrastructure for upcoming AI models like Avocado and Mango. Analysts say this reflects Zuckerberg distributing responsibility among leaders as a way of sharing risk as the company's AI ambitions grow.
