Norway is preparing to temporarily ban the use of AI smart glasses in public areas due to escalating privacy and security concerns, according to Bangkok Post. These wearable devices have enabled people to conduct secret recordings, take photos, and eavesdrop without others' knowledge, which is the primary reason behind this restriction. The country's digital systems minister has expressed particular concern about misuse of these glasses, with reported incidents of people secretly photographing others without consent. Meta's smart glasses are the most commonly used devices of this type. These glasses are equipped with cameras and microphones that allow users to easily record their surroundings without the knowledge of those around them, posing significant risks. The government believes that such temporary bans are necessary to conduct detailed studies on privacy impacts and organize public discussions before establishing permanent legislation.
The restrictions will initially be implemented in healthcare facilities and sports venue changing rooms, with plans to expand to parks, beaches, schools, and other public areas.
