Sony Company has decided to halt PlayStation game disc production starting from January 2028 due to market conditions and changes in popular consumption patterns.
New games released after that will be sold exclusively through digital systems via online stores like PlayStation Store, and previously released game discs will not be affected.
This move reflects the shift in consumer lifestyle trends toward digital media in the entertainment sector.
According to the company's 2025 financial information, game disc sales revenue accounts for only 3 percent of total software sales revenue, which led to the decision to completely transition to digital.
By transitioning to the digital system, Sony will be able to fully control game prices and will recover revenue losses from the second-hand game disc market (pre-owned copies).
Additionally, Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) will be released with only download codes instead of game data on discs, and will be sold exclusively through digital systems.
On the other hand, Sony is also preparing to close PlayStation Store for older systems like PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, which will take effect starting from July 2027 in Thailand.
As major technology companies like this completely transition to digital systems, analysts assess that it could reduce consumer choices and the traditional game disc retail stores may face long-term challenges.
