Tesla's customers who purchased cars since 2019 have been anticipating the "Unsupervised FSD" (full self-driving capability without human supervision), but CEO Elon Musk has openly admitted that this is no longer possible with the current Hardware 3. This confirms that the performance capabilities required for the millions of cars equipped with Hardware 3 are insufficient.
According to Elon Musk, Hardware 3 has limitations in what's called "Memory Bandwidth" in data flow, which means it cannot perform the calculations necessary for true autonomous driving capability.
Tesla had previously claimed that this Hardware would enable full autonomous driving capability. However, by early 2025, the company has had to accept that this system is insufficient. More advanced computing systems and new cameras (Hardware 4 or later versions) will be necessary for autonomous driving capability.
Tesla is considering options to upgrade older cars (Retrofit) or offer trade-in programs with new vehicles. However, upgrading millions of cars would be extremely costly and the process could be very complicated.
For now, Hardware 3 owners will continue to use the "FSD (Supervised)" system, which requires constant human monitoring. This admission by Tesla has become a real challenge for car buyers caught in the midst of rapid technological change.
