Ghost in the Machine? The Truth Behind the Xiaomi Car That Drove Itself
A viral video of a parked Xiaomi car driving away on its own sparked wild speculation online — but Xiaomi's investigation revealed the culprit was a misplaced tap on the parking-assist feature of an iPhone.
A Xiaomi car seemingly driving itself away in Weihai, Shandong province on September 30 went viral on social media. CCTV footage showed the parked car starting up and driving away on its own while the owner was inside the house. The owner denied remotely commanding it via phone, but when Xiaomi dispatched a special investigation team, the real explanation emerged.
It turned out the car system itself wasn't malfunctioning. The owner's iPhone 15 Pro Max had accidentally triggered the "Parking-assist" feature. While the phone remained within Bluetooth range of the car, the command was sent — and the car drove itself off.
The initial confusion that caused a public dispute stemmed from a Xiaomi technician citing the phone's model code (iPhone 16,2), which the owner mistook as a reference to the iPhone 16 model and assumed they were being blamed for a different phone. Both parties have since cross-checked the details and confirmed the car's quality was not at fault.
