Google AI Accused of Giving Life-Threatening Medical Advice

An investigation by The Guardian found that Google's AI-powered summary system (AI Overviews) is providing misleading medical guidance for patients with pancreatic cancer and liver disease, potentially endangering lives. Findings published on January 2 show that some information provided by Google AI is confusing and inaccurate, posing serious health risks to users.
In one case experts called "genuinely dangerous," Google advised pancreatic cancer patients to avoid fatty foods. Anna Jewell of Pancreatic Cancer U.K. warned that following this advice would leave patients unable to get the calories they need, making it difficult to gain the weight required to undergo life-saving surgeries and chemotherapy.
Additionally, AI explanations about liver disease indicator values were described as dangerous, potentially causing patients with serious liver disease to think they are healthy. For cervical cancer screenings, doctors said the AI included information that was "completely wrong." Because these errors appear at the top of search results, experts warn patients may become complacent and dismiss warning symptoms.
A Google spokesperson responded that the allegations are based on "incomplete screenshots," adding that their search results always cite trustworthy sources and recommend consulting a doctor. Google stated that its AI Overviews system aims to be accurate and helpful, and that it continuously works to improve quality.
