Google and cybersecurity companies iVerify and Lookout have discovered a new tool called DarkSword capable of hacking millions of iPhones. The tool exists on infected websites, and simply visiting those sites can immediately compromise phones running iOS 18.
Unlike typical spyware, DarkSword uses a technique that leaves no trace on the device. It hijacks system processes and quickly steals passwords, photos, messages, and cryptocurrency wallet data before the phone reboots.
The tool has been used by Russian state-sponsored spy groups and is linked to a recently discovered hacking tool called Coruna. Most alarmingly, hackers left DarkSword's original source code accessible on websites, meaning other cybercriminals can easily copy and use it.
Security experts believe the tool was not created by the Russian hackers themselves but was purchased from broker companies that trade hacking tools. The ease with which advanced iPhone hacking tools can now be bought on the dark market makes the threat to iPhone users significantly greater.
