Apple officially introduced the highly anticipated iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max smartphones at the tech-shaking "Surprise and Shine" event. The starting prices are set at $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro with 256GB storage and $1,299 for the Pro Max, with sales beginning on September 18th.
The Pro features a 6.3-inch display while the Pro Max has a 6.9-inch LTPO Super Retina OLED display. The Dynamic Island has been made smaller, allowing it to display up to 3 functions simultaneously with clarity. A new Burgundy color option is also included.
The most distinctive and noteworthy upgrade this year is in the camera department. The 48-megapixel main camera features a variable aperture composed of 6 layers thinner than human hair. This allows the camera to automatically open wider during low light conditions to capture more light, while automatically stopping down in well-lit environments to create more vibrant images with this advanced camera technology.
In terms of performance, the new A20 Pro chip delivers 20% faster speeds compared to previous models. It is specifically designed to optimize AI technologies, and includes an expanded cooling system to prevent overheating when playing large games.
On the software side, new Pro controls allow customization of camera settings. Additionally, Apple has enhanced the capabilities of Apple Intelligence and Siri, enabling Visual Intelligence technology that lets users ask questions directly about what they see through the camera. Features like removing unwanted objects from photos and expanding scenes can now be performed with significantly greater accuracy.
Battery life has also seen notable improvements, with Apple confidently guaranteeing that the Pro Max model can play videos continuously for 45 hours. Another interesting feature is that Apple has become the first to implement both Google's SynthID standard and its own new standards for distinguishing authentic natural photos from AI-generated images.
