The scene of robots working instead of humans in a factory is no longer just a movie concept. At the iFACTORY plant in Leipzig, Germany, BMW is actively piloting AI-powered humanoid robots for electric vehicle manufacturing, aiming to integrate advanced robotics with artificial intelligence. Among the robots being tested is the AEON humanoid robot, developed by Zurich-based Hexagon Robotics. The AEON robot stands about 1.65 meters tall and weighs approximately 60 kilograms. Interestingly, it uses wheels instead of feet, allowing it to move quickly and nimbly around the factory floor. It is being used to assist with labor-intensive tasks such as installing EV batteries, tightening bolts, and handling high-voltage battery components that are hazardous for humans. It features 22 sensors including cameras and microphones, and runs on NVIDIA Jetson Orin, enabling it to understand its environment and automatically avoid obstacles. This was not a sudden decision. The technology was first tested for 10 months at a factory in Spartanburg, USA, where the robots handled over 90,000 car parts and helped produce approximately 30,000 vehicles. Based on that success, BMW plans to continue expanding the technology. Ref: gizmochina
