In San Francisco, a fighting match between social media influencer Frankie Lapena and Terminator-style humanoid robots organized by Robot Entertainment Kombat (REK) generated significant public interest. Lapena faced off against three humanoid robots, including a six-foot-tall robot that struck her during the competition.
During the match, an intense punch from one of the robots knocked Lapena forcefully toward the bleachers. However, these robots were not operating autonomously. They were remotely controlled by people using VR equipment from a distance, directly operating and maneuvering the machines.
While the event was unusual and exciting, California's sports commission took action. Officials sent a warning notice to those responsible at REK. The commission strictly prohibited any human combat matches or Mixed Martial Arts competitions held, promoted, or organized within the state without the necessary official permits and licenses.
