In 2025, solar energy usage surged at an unprecedented pace unlike any other time in history, with China alone controlling 53 percent of all global solar energy consumption.
China was able to achieve a remarkable increase of 336 terawatt-hours of new electricity generation from solar energy in 2025, which exceeded the combined 300 terawatt-hours contributed by all other countries in the world, dominating on its own.
Such a strategic milestone has pushed global solar energy production to record-breaking levels, further solidifying China's position as the world's largest solar panel installer and a major investor in the renewable energy sector.
Additionally, China became the first country in history to surpass 1 terawatt of solar energy installation capacity, while continuing to expand larger clean energy infrastructure.
According to Ember's 2026 Global Electricity Review, solar energy in 2025 met up to 75 percent of new global electricity demand.
Because of this supply capability, for the first time in nearly a century, the renewable energy sector was able to surpass fossil fuel consumption.
