TikTok and parent company ByteDance, facing accusations of deliberately designing features to addict children, have reached an out-of-court settlement with Alabama before jury proceedings began.
Under the agreement, TikTok will pay $100 million and achieve the first settlement of its kind with a US state.
According to the agreement, TikTok must immediately implement safety measures including limiting daily usage to no more than 2 hours for children, restricting access during nighttime and school hours, and implementing age verification systems and parental controls within one year.
Additionally, TikTok will disable beauty-related filters for minors, report suspicious interactions to parents, and provide parents with monitoring tools within one year.
These changes will only apply within Alabama. If TikTok fails to comply with the agreement's terms, the company could face additional penalties of up to $300 million. The current $100 million settlement must be paid within 45 days.
