A separate independent panel of 40 international experts appointed by the United Nations has released the world's first scientific assessment report on AI technology. The report warns that AI technology advancement is progressing faster than scientists and governments can understand or control it.
While AI technology is transforming healthcare, education, scientific research, and many other industries, the report states that without systematic safeguards, bad actors could misuse it for cyberattacks, deception, misinformation distribution, and biological threats. Additionally, some advanced AI systems have been found capable of performing unexpected deception, and there is currently no scientific guarantee that future autonomous AI systems will always remain under human control.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged governments to take immediate action without delay before problems escalate further. He called for establishing global common rules to safely advance development while protecting the public from potential risks posed by AI technology.
