Is the Tesla era coming to an end? Chinese EV company BYD has overtaken Tesla to become the world's best-selling electric vehicle manufacturer. In 2025, Tesla's sales declined by about 9% to 1.64 million units, while BYD surged roughly 28% to sell over 2.25 million vehicles.
Why did Tesla fall? Key reasons include new models failing to meet expectations and concerns about Elon Musk's political activities. Other factors include the loss of government subsidies and fierce competition from Chinese rivals like Geely, MG, and BYD offering vehicles at much lower prices.
The challenges ahead for Elon Musk are significant. To unlock his record-breaking compensation package, he must dramatically grow Tesla's share price and sales over the next 10 years — including selling one million Humanoid robots. While he's banking on "Optimus" and "Robotaxis," investors worry that with Musk spread thin across X, SpaceX, and government work, Tesla may not get the attention it needs.
Looking at BYD, sales growth has slowed slightly due to intense domestic competition in China — but low pricing remains their weapon. Despite tariffs from some countries, BYD has successfully expanded into Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Europe, with the UK now its largest international market.
