For the first time, Chinese automaker BYD has overtaken Ford Motor Company in global vehicle sales for the 2025 calendar year. BYD sold approximately 4.6 million vehicles globally in 2025, edging out Ford's 4.4 million by around 200,000 units. According to Bloomberg, the milestone pushed BYD to 6th place in the global rankings, while Ford slid to 7th after its sales declined by nearly 2%. Toyota Motor Corporation continues to lead the global rankings with 11.3 million vehicles sold, followed by Volkswagen Group (under 9 million), Hyundai Motor Group (7.2 million), General Motors (approximately 6.2 million), and Stellantis (approximately 5.5 million). BYD's strong performance — especially in the electric and hybrid vehicle segment — underscores the growing strength of Chinese automakers and signals increasingly fierce competition for traditional Western manufacturers.
