Meta's AI Could Keep Your Facebook Account Active Even After You Die

What if your Facebook account stayed active even after you died? According to Business Insider, Meta has held a patent since 2023 describing an AI system that could take the place of deceased users and continue operating their Facebook accounts.
The patent describes an advanced language model that learns from a user's past posts and writing style, then continues posting on their behalf, chatting with friends, and carrying out social media activity after the person is no longer online — or has passed away.
The primary inventor listed on the patent is Meta's Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth. The filing includes detailed descriptions of AI-generated posts, comments, and messages that would simulate the deceased user's online presence.
However, following the report's publication, Meta denied having any current plans to implement such a feature, distancing itself from the concept. Regardless, the existence of the patent raises significant ethical questions about digital identity, consent, and the future of social media after death.
